We’ve all experienced how a sunny day can boost our mood or how a gloomy, overcast sky can sometimes make us feel down. While I personally enjoy all types of weather (so long as I'm wearing the right gear!!!), in my guided walks I often encounter people who do not enjoy going out in the rain or who even get headaches just before a storm. So why does the weather have such a strong impact on our emotions? And more importantly, what can we do to stay upbeat regardless of what’s happening outside?
Let’s dive into the fascinating science behind how weather affects our mood and explore some practical tips to keep our spirits high through all seasons.
The Science of How Weather Affects Our Mood
1. Sunshine and Serotonin
Sunlight is a natural mood booster. When we’re exposed to sunlight, our brains produce more serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of happiness and well-being. More sunshine means a natural lift in mood, and studies have shown that people generally feel happier, more energetic, and positive on bright days.
2. Shorter Days, Lower Energy
In autumn and winter, shorter daylight hours and longer nights can lead to a decrease in serotonin and a dip in mood. For some people, the lack of sunlight can trigger Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression that occurs in the darker months and leads to symptoms like fatigue, irritability, and lack of motivation.
3. Humidity and Fatigue
High humidity can make us feel sluggish and irritable. Our bodies work hard to regulate temperature, and when it’s humid, we sweat more, which can lead to physical and mental fatigue. People may feel more restless, distracted, or even anxious on particularly muggy days.
4. Rain and Melancholy
Rainy or cloudy weather often reduces the amount of sunlight we’re exposed to, which can reduce serotonin and make us feel more tired or withdrawn. The sound of rain, however, has a unique effect—while it can make some people feel gloomy, for others it has a calming, soothing effect, helping them to relax and even sleep better.
Tips to Stay Upbeat in Any Weather
Regardless of what’s happening outside, we can take action to keep our spirits high. Here are some practical tips to stay positive through changing weather:
1. Get Outside Whenever Possible
Even on cloudy days, spending time outdoors can expose us to more natural light than indoor lighting. Even just a 10 -15 minute walk can help lift your spirits. If you can’t get outside, spend time near a window, work in the greenhouse or use mirrors to maximize natural light in your living spaces. Being able to look out at the rain is often much easier for those who don't like to be in it.
2. Exercise Regularly
Exercise boosts endorphins and serotonin levels, which can counteract mood dips from gloomy weather. On rainy or cold days, try indoor activities like yoga, stretching, or a home workout routine. Aim to stay consistent with your exercise routine to maintain a steady mood boost.
3. Invest in a Light Therapy Lamp
For those affected by darker months or who struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder, light therapy can be a great solution. Light therapy lamps mimic natural sunlight, helping to stimulate serotonin production and reduce symptoms of SAD. Using a lamp for 20–30 minutes a day in the morning can make a noticeable difference. I personally use one to wake up to every morning and have a wonderful set of birds gently chirping me awake as the alarm. It's changed my ability to get up more quickly in the wintry months.
4. Embrace Cozy Activities
Instead of letting rainy or snowy days bring you down, make the most of them! Cozy up with a good book, try out a new recipe, do some journaling, or watch a favorite movie. Embracing cozy activities can turn a gloomy day into a restorative experience.
5. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation
Mindfulness and meditation can help you stay grounded regardless of external circumstances. If you’re feeling down due to gray skies or chilly temperatures, take a few minutes to center yourself, focus on your breathing, and let go of weather-related frustrations. Over time, this practice can help you build resilience against seasonal mood changes.
6. Stay Connected
Colder or rainy weather can sometimes make us feel isolated, especially if we’re indoors more than usual. Make an effort to stay connected with friends and family, even if it’s virtual. Socializing releases oxytocin, a hormone that promotes feelings of happiness and reduces stress. Whether this means that we go meet up with friends or catch up over WhatsApp or Zoom, tapping into our network of relationships definitely helps.
7. Add a Splash of Color
Adding bright colors to your surroundings can make a big difference. Wear a bright outfit, decorate with vibrant art or fresh flowers, or add a cheerful touch to your workspace. Bright colors can energize your mood, and small changes can help counteract the gloom of a gray day.
8. Plan for Small Things to Look Forward To
Sometimes, the best way to stay positive is to have something to look forward to, especially when the weather feels unendingly gray or dreary. Make plans for a mini adventure, whether it’s a nature hike on the next sunny day or a movie night with friends. Anticipating small joys can help you feel upbeat.
Final Thoughts: Finding Joy in All Weather
Weather undeniably has a powerful impact on our mood, but it doesn’t have to control how we feel. By embracing strategies to boost our mental well-being, we can create resilience and find joy in any season. Whether it’s embracing the sunshine, listening to the sound of rain, or getting cozy on a chilly day, nature offers beauty and peace that we can learn to appreciate year-round.
