Hiking Up The Pic de Bugarach: North Face or South Side?

Writer: Jo MooreJo Moore

The Pic de Bugarach, standing at 1,230 meters, is the highest peak in the Corbières Massif of Aude, France, known for its unique geology and panoramic views, it offers hikers two primary ascent routes:

1. Col du Linas Route:

This trail begins at the Col du Linas and is approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long, typically completed in about 3 hours. It's a linear path there and back. The path ascends gradually through forested areas before becoming steeper near the summit. It's considered moderately challenging and is suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. Out of the two options, this route is more suitable to those who suffer a mild degree of vertigo.

2. North Face Route:

This path is more demanding and is recommended for experienced hikers. It involves much steeper inclines and may require some scrambling. I personally find myself on all fours fairly frequently! The route is circular, starting and finishing in the village of Bugarach, ascedning via the north face and descending via the Col du Linas on the south side, about 15 kilometers. The trail offers a more direct ascent to the summit but demands caution due to its challenging terrain. Having suffered from vertigo in the past, this is a definitie no-no for anyone who gets dizzy.

Choosing the Right Route:

- For a Moderate Challenge: The Col du Linas route provides a balanced hike with a mix of gradual ascents and steeper sections, making it suitable for most hikers. This isn't to be underestimated but I've have even seen toy poodles and dachshunds going up and down!

- For an Adventurous Experience: The North Face route offers a more strenuous climb, ideal for those seeking a challenging ascent with potentially fewer fellow hikers. Going in the height of summer can be tough: there's very little foliage to take shelter from the heat of the sun.

Tips for Hiking Up The Pic de Bugarach:

- Preparation: Ensure you're well-prepared with appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, and navigation tools. Be sure to take adequate water and snack because this could take you longer than you think.

- Weather Considerations: Check the local weather forecast before your hike, as conditions can change rapidly in mountainous areas. I've experienced thick fog descending very quickly reducing visiblity to 10 metres, on a terrain where sure-footedness is absolutely imperative.

- Safety: Always inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time. Consider hiking with a companion, especially on the more challenging North Face route.

Both routes reward hikers with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes (the Mediterranean on a clear day, the Pyrenees and the Corbières Massif), making the Pech de Bugarach a must-visit destination for hiking enthusiasts in the region.

The Mystery of Bugarach: France’s "Upside-Down Mountain" and its Legends

Nestled in the Aude department of southern France, the Pic de Bugarach stands at 1,230 meters, towering over the Corbières Massif. But this is no ordinary peak - Bugarach is shrouded in mystery, myths, and supernatural lore. Known as the "Upside-Down Mountain", it has fascinated scientists, mystics, and conspiracy theorists alike.

From alien bases to hidden underground cities, and even being rumored as the only place to survive the 2012 "Mayan apocalypse", Bugarach remains one of the most enigmatic locations in France. Let’s dive into the science, legends, and mysteries surrounding this peculiar peak.

Why is Bugarach Called the "Upside-Down Mountain"?

One of the strangest features of Bugarach is its geological anomaly - the peak appears geologically inverted. Scientists discovered that the older rock layers (from the Jurassic era) are mysteriously positioned above younger layers. Normally, rock formations develop over time with older layers buried beneath newer ones, but Bugarach defies this natural order.

The Science Behind the Inversion

Geologists believe this phenomenon occurred due to tectonic movements and geological upheavals millions of years ago, flipping parts of the mountain’s structure. Some suggest that it was part of an ancient seabed that was later pushed upwards, creating its distinct "upside-down" appearance.

But while science offers one explanation, others believe something more mysterious is at play…

Alien Theories and UFO Sightings

The Pic de Bugarach is often linked to extraterrestrial activity. Over the years, there have been numerous reports of strange lights, UFO sightings, and mysterious sounds coming from the mountain.

The Underground Alien Base Theory

Some believe that Bugarach is home to a hidden alien base, buried deep within its caves and tunnels.

✔️ Local legends claim that mysterious energy fields surround the mountain.

✔️ Some hikers have reported electronic devices malfunctioning near the peak.

✔️ UFO enthusiasts suggest that alien spacecraft use Bugarach as a landing site or gateway to another dimension.

The French government has never confirmed or denied these claims, adding to the intrigue. There is, however, a military airbase in the neighbouring Corbières Massif....

The 2012 Doomsday Prophecy

In the years leading up to December 21, 2012, when the Mayan calendar was said to predict the "end of the world", Bugarach became a global hotspot for apocalypse believers.

✔️ Some thought Bugarach would be the only safe place on Earth when disaster struck.

✔️ Others believed aliens living inside the mountain would emerge and save a chosen few.

✔️ Hundreds of people from all over the world traveled to Bugarach, hoping to witness a miraculous event.

To prevent chaos, the French authorities even restricted access to the mountain in December 2012. But when the world didn’t end, many left disappointed - while the mountain’s mystery only grew stronger.

Spiritual and Occult Connections

Bugarach has long been considered a place of power by mystics, esoteric groups, and secret societies.

✔️ Some claim it’s linked to the Holy Grail legends, suggesting that hidden relics or ancient wisdom lie buried beneath.

✔️ Others believe the Cathars (a medieval religious group persecuted by the Catholic Church) may have hidden sacred treasures in the area.

✔️ Some New Age followers say the mountain has healing energies and supernatural forces that attract spiritual seekers.

Whether it’s true or not, many visitors report feeling an unusual energy when near the mountain. I've met a lot of people over the years who visit simply to pray and meditate at this special and sacred site.

It’s a place where geology defies logic, UFO theories thrive, and spiritual seekers find inspiration.
