The Pic de Saint-Barthélemy, standing at 2,348 meters, is the highest peak in the Massif de Tabe in the Ariège department of France. Renowned for its panoramic vistas of the Pyrenees and surrounding valleys, it offers hikers a rewarding yet challenging experience.
I had lived and walked in the Razès for over 10 years, always staring at this mountain from afar, until one day, it dawned on me that instead of looking at it, I should go climb it. And so I did. And nowadays, it's become one of my annual pilgrimmages and the two routes below are my favourite ways to summit.
Popular Hiking Routes:
1. Les Monts d'Olmes Route:
- Distance: Approximately 10 kilometers round trip.
- Elevation Gain: Around 1,048 meters.
- Estimated Duration: A minimum of 4 hours depending on your level of fitness.
- Description: This trail begins near at the ski resort of Monts d'Olmes and is considered challenging due to its length and elevation gain. Hikers traverse alpine meadows to reach the Col de l'Étang d'Appy, and then climb open scree rock faces, before reaching the summit. The path is well-marked and offers scenic views of the Ariège, Pyrenees and beyond into Spain. The downside is that this is not a round trip (back and forth route) unless you want to extend the return and pass via the Étang d'Appy and the Pic du Han.

2. Lac de Moulzoune Route:
- Distance: Approximately 13.5 kilometers round trip.
- Elevation Gain: About 1450 meters.
- Estimated Duration: A minimum of six hours for the very fit.
- Description: Starting from the Moulzoune area, this route is demanding due to its steady ascent. Hikers pass through picturesque landscapes, including sections with panoramic views of the Ariège and Pyrenees, before reaching the peak.
I personally prefer to climb up via the Pic de Soularac, passing the Étang des Truites (Trout Pond) and the Étang du Diable (Devil's Pond) onto the Pic de Saint-Barthélemy, descending via the crests. The waymarkers are very clear and the views into Spain from the summit are simply breath-taking. This option also allows for a swim on a hot day!

Tips for Hikers Climbing the Pic de Saint-Barthélemy in the Ariège:
- Preparation: Ensure you're in good physical condition and have experience with mountain hiking. Never go alone unless you absolutely know what you are doing and are well-equipped to deal with adverse mountain conditions.
- Equipment: Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes, carry weather-appropriate clothing, plenty of drinking water, and bring trekking poles for support.
- Navigation: Use detailed maps or GPS devices, as some sections may be less clearly marked. I have found the IGNrando and/or GaiaGPS apps to be the best and absolutely essential when dense fog suddenly sets in.
- Weather: Check the local weather forecast before your hike, as conditions can change rapidly in mountainous areas. This doesn't guarantee good weather so be warned.
- Safety: Inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time. Consider hiking with a companion or two.
- Start early: My experience of the Pyrenees has been that the weather can, and frequently does, change very quickly. It is always best therefore to set off very early morning if possible in order to get the best views from the summit before the clouds set in.

To really make the most of your day-out, there are two great spots ideal for a relaxing picnic or refreshing swim. Notable among these are the Étang des Truites and the Étang du Diable, both nestled within the Massif de Tabe.
Étang des Truites (Trout Pond):

- Features: The tranquil waters and surrounding meadows provide a peaceful setting to swim, rest and enjoy a meal amidst nature.
Étang du Diable (Devil's Pond):
- Location: Also located en route to the Pic de Saint-Barthélemy, this pond is enveloped by rugged terrain, offering a unique and somewhat mystical ambiance.
- Features: The area around the pond is suitable for picnics, allowing hikers to pause and take in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
